Renaissance Buckler

This buckler of classic renaissance form is most likely of Italian origin based on the style of the six panels of etching on its face featuring hippogryphs, cockatrice and human fiugres possibly hunting. It is 10 5/8 inches in diameter, of broad conicle form with a 2 1/4 inches tall central spike. Gripped by two leather straps (now perished but some remains of leather behind washers), this is a fine and rare little shield.
